The project at a glance
Custom software for the complete lifecycle of a used camera
A used camera is more than a standard stock item: condition, serial number, purchasing and valuation belong to the same product. For ReFoto, we developed the Magento platform around that everyday reality, from purchasing to sale.
- Our role
- 5 years of Magento 2 development
- The challenge
- Connect used-equipment purchasing, stock and sales
- What we delivered
- Custom purchasing workflows, Channable integration and checkout improvements

How the solution fits together
- Take in used equipmentRecord valuation, condition and serial numbers within the purchasing workflow.
- Keep stock manageableConnect purchasing, inventory and accounting processes.
- Support salesDistribute products to sales channels and develop the mobile checkout.
A schematic explanation of the approach described; not a live system view.
Where we went beyond implementation
- Start with the realities of used-equipment retail
- We looked beyond displaying products online. Valuation, condition, serial numbers, purchasing and accounting needed to form a usable workflow for a specialist used-equipment retailer.
- Improve without replacing everything
- The existing Magento store remained the foundation. Capabilities were added step by step, from purchasing workflows to Channable integrations and checkout improvements, aligning technical decisions with the existing operation.
- Develop alongside everyday needs
- The relationship spanned several years. That allowed us to keep improving product administration, sales channels and mobile ordering after the initial delivery, rather than treating the store as a one-off build.
The duration and results below refer to the engagement described.
Project overview
ReFoto is a specialist retailer of used photographic equipment based in Dedemsvaart. Over five years, I developed and optimised its existing Magento 2 platform, supporting a catalogue of more than 10,000 products.
The starting point was a working webshop. The value came from years of refinement and automation addressing the specific needs of used equipment sales. Rather than replacing the entire system, we improved it incrementally to support day-to-day operations.
The challenges of used equipment
Each used camera or lens has its own condition, serial number and specifications. Standard stock management does not cover every aspect of this workflow. Purchasing used equipment also requires valuation, condition assessment and individual pricing.
A custom purchasing system integrated these processes with Magento 2. It supported the journey from purchasing an item to listing it online, including direct accounting integration and stopholding functionality. This allowed ReFoto to respond to available equipment and make it available for sale more efficiently.
Strategic automation
A Channable integration automated product listings across marketplaces. Product information, prices and stock levels could be synchronised across sales channels, reducing manual feed management and expanding market reach without the same increase in operational work.
We also developed connections to external suppliers for new products. Although the storefront remained focused on photography, the backend could support a broader catalogue through automated data synchronisation and order processing. This allowed ReFoto to retain its used equipment specialism while expanding its range.
Continuous improvement and modernisation
A more recent development in the original account was a redesigned checkout. Fewer required fields, real-time validation and a mobile-first interface aimed to reduce friction and improve the customer experience.
This work reflected the platform's ongoing evolution. Development continued to respond to changing user behaviour and market conditions, with process automation, performance and simpler workflows as recurring priorities.
Business impact and operational benefits
The original case study reported estimated revenue growth of 34% over the five-year period, with automation and improvements to the user experience contributing to that development. The purchasing system enabled a larger volume of equipment to be handled without a corresponding increase in staffing.
The Channable integration reduced time spent managing product information. Automated workflows also reduced opportunities for mistakes in stock and pricing. These changes supported growth while controlling operational costs in a price-sensitive market.
Technical architecture and incremental development
The existing Magento 2 platform provided the foundation for new capabilities. We deliberately retained working functionality and added modular extensions rather than undertaking a disruptive replacement.
New features integrated with the existing architecture. This approach was particularly useful for the purchasing system and marketplace connections, where operational continuity mattered alongside new functionality.
A long-term technical partnership
Five years of continuous optimisation allowed ReFoto to adapt incrementally without a major platform migration. The business remained operational while new features were introduced and existing processes improved.
The partnership also built detailed knowledge of the used equipment market. ReFoto benefited from ongoing development, while a deeper understanding of its workflows made subsequent improvements more relevant.
